Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll resigned March 12, 2013 in the wake of a federal investigation into a chain of internet cafes, Allied Veterans of the World, which she once represented. Lieutenant Governor Carroll consulted for the company in 2009 and 2010 when she was serving in the Florida House of Representatives. She resigned to prevent the investigation from undermining the work of Governor Scott. Florida law provides that the Governor shall name a successor. Governor Scott intends to wait until after the conclusion of the 2013 legislative session to appoint her successor.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is heading up the multi-agency investigation of internet gaming non-profit Allied Veterans of the World. To date, the 6-year investigation has involved six states, twenty-three Florida counties, forty-nine illegal gambling sites and has resulted in fifty-seven arrests.
