The 2024 Legislative Session began on Tuesday, January 9th. The regular session will run for sixty days with an end date of March 8th, unless extended to conclude business. The Florida Constitution stipulates that the regular session of the Legislature shall convene on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March of each odd-numbered year, and on the second Tuesday after the first Monday in January of each even-numbered year. This schedule ensures that the session will end early in election years in order to accommodate candidate campaigns and fund-raising efforts.
The 2024 Session will be the last year of the current presiding officers’ terms. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) and House Speaker Paul Renner (P-Palm Coast) will lead their respective chambers. Republicans are the majority party in both chambers with 28 senators (out of 40) and 84 representatives (out of 120, with one vacancy – District 35, part of Hernando County).
Looking forward to the 2024 Florida legislative elections in November, eight Senators will be termed out of office as required by law (five Republicans and three Democrats). Fifteen House members will likewise be termed out (13 Republicans and two Democrats).
