ELECTION INTERFERENCE SENTENCING Frank Artiles, a former Republican state senator convicted last month of orchestrating a ghost candidate scheme that likely stole an election from an incumbent Democrat, was sentenced to 60 days in jail, five years of probation and 500 hours of community service. However, the judge agreed to stay the order until after the defense appeals the verdict with the higher court. The judge’s order also forbids the former legislator from future work in the political realm.
AMUSEMENT RIDE LAWSUIT In 2022, a 14-year-old fell to his death while riding the Orlando FreeFall ride at Universal Studios. The jury determined that the operators did not follow restrictions regarding patron weight. An Orlando jury awarded the boy’s family $310 million in damages from the Austrian manufacturer and a German-based amusement company.
SPORTS BETTING The Seminole Tribe of Florida announced an agreement with two companies which ends legal disputes over the Tribe’s control of online sports betting. Under the agreement, Battle Court Jai Alai will be included on the Seminole Tribe’s sports betting app in early 2025. This 30-year deal guarantees that the State of Florida will receive $20 billion.
