STOP WOKE ACT A U.S. District Court judge has blocked a recently passed law restricting the way race-related concepts can be taught in universities. The preliminary injunction came about as a result of two lawsuits filed by professors and students from several state universities. An appeal is expected by the DeSantis administration.
SPORTS BETTING Lawyers for the federal government asked a federal appeals court to reverse a ruling that invalidated Florida’s attempt to give the Seminole Tribe of Florida a monopoly on sports betting in the state. The case could influence how agreements with sovereign tribes are handled in the future. At issue is whether the U.S. Secretary of Interior acted within her authority under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act when she let the gambling agreement negotiated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Governor DeSantis to take effect.
SCHOOL BOARD SPEECH RESTRICTION The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s denial of a preliminary injunction in a case involving the Brevard County School Board. Moms for Liberty members objected to the Board’s policy on public participation during meetings. The Moms contended the time restrictions violated their First Amendment rights.
APPEALS COURT NOMINATIONS The Florida Supreme Court rejected arguments regarding eligibility of candidates who live outside the jurisdictions of the 5th District Court of Appeal and the new 6th District Court of Appeal. The ruling said a residency requirement would apply at the time judges are appointed — not when candidates are put forward by judicial nominating commissions.
