NON-NATIVE LIZARDS Scientists are asking the public to report sightings of the invasive brown basilisk lizard by going to EddMapS to aid in determining the lizard’s potential impact on the environment, wildlife, and human health. The lizard has been found from Miami to Brevard County and can be identified by a head crest, distinct yellow or cream stripes on the side of their body and the appearance of running across water. They range in size from 11 to 27 inches.

MANGROVES Over 200 acres of mangrove forest has been restored in Collier County’s Fruit Farm Creek. The restoration project was a partnership between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Department of Environmental Protection, and the City of Marco Island. These forests provide additional coastal protections during storms.

AVIAN FLU The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is continuing to monitor outbreaks of the Avian Influenza in Florida. Thirty-seven counties have had confirmed cases in species that include black vultures, Muscovy ducks, owls, and bald eagles.

WILDLIFE CORRIDOR The Florida Cabinet approved spending $46.6 million to conserve 21,000 acres on five parcels throughout the state. Four of the properties are in the Florida Wildlife Corridor, furthering the protection for over 700 species. Also, another $17.8 million in land-conservation deals was approved that include protecting two properties that are part of the Corridor.
