John Young Astronaut John Young, who grew up in Orlando, died at his home in Houston on January 5, 2018. Young worked for NASA for 42 years and flew a record six space missions, piloting the first manned Gemini mission; making two trips to the moon; and commanding the very first and the ninth Space Shuttle Missions, in 1981 and 1983. He is survived by his wife and two children.
