Nancy Detert Former State Senator Nancy Detert (R-Venice) died on April 5th at the age of 78. Detert, a Sarasota County Commissioner since 2016, was elected to the Florida House in 1998 and to the Senate in 2008, serving for 8 years. Notably, while in the Senate she helped pass a bill, the Nancy Detert Caring and Compassionate Act, extending foster care to the age of 21. Detert served as chair of the Sarasota County Commission in 2018 and as vice chair in 2017 and in 2023.
