From The Capitol

Florida held a successful general election and certified the results in time for the November 19th organizational session when newly elected, and reelected, members were sworn into office.

Many Floridians have been tapped to join the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Go here to see the list of nominees and appointments, many subject to Senate confirmation, as well as some information about their backgrounds.

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach) was initially nominated for United States Attorney General but withdrew his name from consideration. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, who was selected for the Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator, likewise withdrew his name.

Two of Florida’s congressional seats will be vacated, including District 1, formerly held by Congressman Matt Gaetz and District 6, currently held by Congressman Mike Waltz (R-St. Augustine) who has been tapped as National Security Advisor. A special election will be held for both congressional seats with the primary election set for January 28, 2025, and the general election on April 1st. Several candidates have emerged including Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis and Representative Joel Rudman (R-Navarre) for CD 1 and recently elected Florida Senator Randy Fine (R-Palm Bay) for CD 6. Patronis and Fine have been endorsed by President-Elect Trump.
